New York City is served by three major airports, and choosing the right one can significantly impact your travel experience. JFK is the international hub, LaGuardia handles most domestic flights, and Newark serves both with a New Jersey location that is sometimes closer to Manhattan than JFK. Each airport has different strengths depending on your airline, destination, time of day, and where you are staying in the city. A professional airport transfer to any of these airports takes the stress out of the logistics, but picking the right airport in the first place is the smartest move you can make.
JFK: Best for International and Long-Haul Flights
John F. Kennedy International Airport is the busiest international gateway in the US. If you are flying to Europe, Asia, or South America, JFK is almost certainly your airport. It is located in Queens, about 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan, and the drive takes 45–75 minutes depending on traffic. JFK has six terminals and serves every major international carrier. The new Terminal One redevelopment is adding world-class amenities. The downside is distance — during rush hour, the Van Wyck Expressway can turn a 45-minute ride into 90 minutes.
LaGuardia: Best for Domestic Flights and Midtown Access
LaGuardia Airport completed a massive $8 billion renovation and is now one of the best domestic airports in the country. It is the closest airport to Midtown Manhattan — just 8 miles away — making it ideal for business travelers with tight schedules. If you are flying domestically on Delta, American, United, or Southwest, LaGuardia is likely your best bet. The drive from Midtown takes 20–40 minutes outside of rush hour. The catch: LaGuardia does not handle international flights (with rare exceptions for Canadian pre-clearance routes).
Newark: The Underrated Option
Newark Liberty International Airport is technically in New Jersey, but it is often closer to Lower Manhattan and the Financial District than JFK. United Airlines has a massive hub here, and international carriers like Lufthansa, TAP, and Singapore Airlines offer competitive routes. The drive from Midtown takes 30–50 minutes via the Lincoln Tunnel or 40–60 minutes via the George Washington Bridge, depending on your Manhattan starting point. Newark is also the best airport if you are headed to or from New Jersey, Connecticut, or Westchester.
